A Christmas Tradition Full of Joy

Christmas is such a special time of year. It’s not just about the festivities—it’s about connection and giving. This season reminds us of the joy in sharing, and being present with those around us. At Pumadventures, this time of year holds a special place in our hearts, as it brings us together in the spirit of generosity and gratitude.

One of our most cherished traditions is the Chocolatada, a celebration that brings us to Ocotuan, a beautiful little community in the Andes. Every December, this quiet town fills with laughter, warmth, and love as we gather with the children and families.

The day is filled with so much joy. Clowns entertain the kids with silly antics that bring endless giggles. Games and activities keep the energy alive, with children running, laughing, and simply enjoying the moment. And then there’s the hot chocolate and panetón—classic holiday treats that warm everyone from the inside out. Sitting together, sharing these simple joys, reminds us how meaningful the small things can be.

One of the most touching moments of the Chocolatada is when we hand out presents to the children. Their smiles light up the entire day, and the excitement in their eyes is unforgettable. For some of these children, it’s the only gift they’ll receive during the holidays. Knowing we can make even a small difference in their lives is humbling. But it’s not just about the gifts. It’s about showing these kids that they matter—that they’re seen, valued, and loved.

At Pumadventures, we embrace Ayni, an Andean principle that guides everything we do. Ayni teaches us the importance of reciprocity—giving back in gratitude for what we receive. The Chocolatada is one way we express our thanks to Pachamama, the Apus, and the people around us—a gesture of love, respect, and the bonds that connect us all.

None of this would be possible without the incredible people who travel with us this year. Your journeys help support initiatives like the Chocolatada, turning each trip into something far greater. Together, we’re creating moments that matter—whether it’s sitting with a child over a warm drink, sharing a laugh, or simply being present. Moments like these remind us of what Christmas is truly about: kindness, togetherness, and the joy of giving.

As this year comes to a close, we want to say thank you. Thank you to the community of Ocotuan for welcoming us so warmly and letting us be part of your lives. Thank you to our travelers and partners for making it all possible. This Christmas, we’re reminded of how powerful generosity and connection can be, and we carry that inspiration into the new year.

From all of us at Pumadventures, we wish you a holiday season full of love, laughter, and special moments. Here’s to more adventures, more discovering, more giving, and more joy in the year to come.
