High in the Andean plateau of Cusco, Peru, where the sky often paints itself with rainbows and the Apus (sacred mountains) watch in silence, lies Chinchero – a place where ancestral wisdom, living traditions, and sacred landscapes converge. Known as The Land of the Rainbow and Sacred Knowledge, Chinchero is a living memory of the Inca world.

At Pumadventures, we invite you to experience Chinchero as a cultural encounter rooted in respect, connection, and authenticity.

A Sacred Inca Legacy

Inca Túpac Yupanqui owned a royal estate there at Chinchero. This estate existed between Cusco and the Sacred Valley. The stone terraces, ceremonial plazas, and foundations of the estate exemplified the high level of Inca engineering in their spirituality of nature.

Chinchero, at an elevation of 3720 m (12240 ft), sees over the whole Vilcabamba range, especially seeing the peaks of Salkantay and Verónica, which protect and guide the people spiritually.

Here, the Incas honored Pachamama (Mother Earth) and the cycles of the cosmos, knowledge that still lives on through our Quechua communities.

The Living Art of Andean Weaving

Chinchero, a world-famous village, preserves the Andes ancestral textile weaving tradition in its purest form.

Women in the area still do the arts their ancestors taught them. Every textile recalls the land beyond, the stars above, the beasts around, the people within. Natural dyes help derive reds, yellows, ochres, browns, and blacks, from plants, minerals, and cochineal insects, by harmonizing, respecting and interacting with nature.

The traveler can participate or spectate for a glimpse into Andean cosmology with the sacred language of symbols.

Colonial History and Spiritual Syncretism

At the heart of Chinchero stands the Colonial Church of Our Lady of Monserrat, built in the 17th century directly on Inca foundations. Inside, visitors find exquisite murals from the Cusco School of Art, blending Christian imagery with Andean symbolism.

This fusion reflects the spiritual resilience of the Andean people – a dialogue between ancient beliefs and colonial history that still shapes local identity today.
